Regulations

DNA samples are not currently regulated. However, NIH guidelines should be followed for proper handling. Samples should be shipped in clearly-labeled sterile micro-centrifuge or screw cap tubes sealed with Parafilm. Tubes should be wrapped in an absorbent material such as Kim Wipes and placed in a secondary containment system such as a Zip lock bag or a larger screw cap tube and this container should be placed in a small box or cushioned shipping envelope to ensure the sample arrives safely and intact.

Transgenic plantlets are members of a regulated class of items. The ISU Crop Bioengineering Laboratory will ship all materials in accordance with HAZMAT regulation and only with a proper APHIS permit, which is furnished by the client. International shipment may require import permits, letters and/or certificates. The facility consults with the state USDA representative for international shipping regulation information on a case-by-case basis. Clients are expected to consult with their customs officials to obtain current information for importation of transgenic plant materials.

Pharma: Transgenic plant materials and seed containing pharma constructs must meet a higher level shipping standard. The Iowa State Crop Bioengineering Laboratory consults with its institutional EH&S and federal agency representatives on a case-by-case basis to ensure proper permitting and shipping of these materials.
